ACU as camouflage is a bad decision for a number of reasons, and most people from most SOF units I know would agree. The multi-camera model and the old forest pattern are both much more efficient and (for the film's sake) look better. The ACU pattern screamed: "I'm on leave after flying school and I'm waiting to go to my unit." He certainly won't be wearing any pattern in civilian clothes, unless maybe he's an old man who either doesn't know anything or doesn't care (which, frankly, happens a lot). This includes bags, purses, shoes or anything else.
Don't get me wrong, if I ever found myself in the world of Top Gun, I'd be wearing a dog tag on the beach too. However, it's not the 1980s anymore and people don't wear dog tags in public any more than firemen don't wear voting gear in bars. In today's SOF culture, it unnecessarily signifies one's military service and is frowned upon in almost every circle. The only time these guys wear dog tags is in uniform, and sometimes in battle (depending on who you talk to).
It's tricky, because different units do it differently and because the Rangers have a history with easily recognizable haircuts. But these days, if you're a Ranger or MARSOC, you usually shave your face and get a neat but non-military haircut. If you're in SF, you might be able to grow a beard - it depends on the unit, and often the individual jobs within the unit. Each Special Ops group has different standards, but most will not subscribe to high, tight or more "military" haircuts (including Rangers). If I were to give Hollywood hair stylists all the way advice, I'd tell them to just give the guy a classic side part, like you'd imagine a 1940s military man would do.
The fact is: anything that shouts: "I was in the army!" Usually doesn't match your average special ops veteran, and will subconsciously tell the audience that your character isn't a veteran either (which you, as a filmmaker, should minimize). Sure, you might have Silent Flash Ranger or Trident SEAL, and pretty much whatever "look" these guys like (tattooed arms, neat cuts but longer hair), but they're usually trying to blend in, wearing a Chuck-T. and Millennium Falcon shirts. And yes, everyone knows the exceptions to the rule - but most of these players are ex-PJs or ex-Marines, not some weird guy who goes out and buys an ACU backpack to wear around campus.
