Scramjets, or supersonic ramjets, are not new technologies—they've been tested for years, but until now, no nation has been able to deploy a scramjet powered by a missile or airplane. It is about creating an airplane that can take off and land like a conventional airplane while achieving and maintaining hypersonic speeds in the center of the plane. The ROI specifies two different types of payloads that the new aircraft will carry: a "partial payload," and a "large payload."
The Mayhem effort, however, aims to build two-cycle engines that can work at low speeds until the plane is high enough and fast enough for the scramjet to take off. .. just like Darkstar was seen during Maverick's hypersonic test-flight. featured in the movie.

As you can see in this NASA photo, scramjets have no internal moving parts, which makes them very efficient (but very difficult to design).

As we emphasized at the time, these successes suggest that the United States is leading the way in weapons that use air defense systems.
The United States has only developed conventional (non-nuclear) hypersonic weapons, which creates many challenges that are not available in the systems used by American competitors. Perhaps the most important thing is the targeting: nuclear weapons have large explosion radii, which allows for inaccurate weapons. A conventional hypersonic missile would have to be more accurate to destroy its target.
While these non-nuclear hypersonic weapons can be very valuable, they are also very expensive – leading some to question the importance of developing the weapons in the first place. After all, the popularity of hypersonic weapons is the ability to defeat air defenses, but the same thing can be achieved through high-speed, low-cost systems.
